Our incredible volunteer team
We are proud to have a growing team of over 60 wonderful volunteers.
Most work in the Hub to sort, store and distribute food, whilst others drive our two refrigerated delivery vans. As food is collected seven days per week all year from Costco (except for a few public holidays), several days per week from Coles and weekly from other sources the volunteers work in teams rostered for particular days, including weekends.
This work is managed by teams of dedicated volunteers who are passionately committed to supporting their local community and ensuring rescued food is distributed to people who need it the most. All our volunteers are registered with us, have working With Children Checks and have been inducted in food safety and manual handling. Many of our volunteers are local people with a passion to help others. They love the idea of giving their time and effort to help their community. Finding a great sense of comradery and fulfilment volunteering with other like-minded people is important to our team. They are also aware that their efforts reduce the amount of food that would go to landfill.
We are very grateful for Yarra Ranges Council providing volunteer insurance. New volunteers are recruited via social media, public speaking, Seek Volunteer, Go Volunteer and referrals from “Volunteer for Knox.” Whilst volunteers are not paid, they are permitted to take a small share of food home for personal use.
We value our volunteers – we can’t do this without them! We host three thank you events for our volunteers each year and encourage further accredited training for those interested.
